DUNNVILLE — As the Dunnville Mudcat Festival prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, organizers are bringing back a familiar and beloved tradition — one that crowned generations of local women and became a symbol of community pride.

For decades, titles such as Miss Mudcat and Miss Grand River were highlights of the annual festival, recognizing women who represented Dunnville with confidence, community spirit, and pride. Old photographs and newspaper clippings tell the story of these moments — crowns placed, sashes worn, and memories made on stages that brought the community together year after year.

Today, as organizers dig through archives and collect these pieces of history, a renewed appreciation for the tradition has emerged.

“We’ve been going through old photos and newspaper clippings, and it’s incredible to see just how many women were part of this,” said Mudcat Festival Coordinator Marianne Kidd. “It really was a cornerstone of the festival for so many years.”

The exact timeline of when the tradition came to an end remains unclear, but its impact has not been forgotten.

“As we celebrate 50 years of the Mudcat Festival, it felt like the right time to bring it back,” Kidd said. “Not exactly as it was — but in a way that reflects today’s community and creates a new kind of experience for women.”

Organizers have begun building a growing online gallery featuring past winners, with plans to continue adding names and photos as they are discovered.

“We know we don’t have everyone yet,” Kidd added. “But we’re excited to keep uncovering those stories and recognizing as many past participants as we can. It’s an important part of our history.”

The reimagined Ms. Mudcat Ambassador Experience aims to honour that legacy while offering a more modern, inclusive approach. Open to women ages 18 and over, the experience focuses on participation, confidence, and community connection — inviting women of all ages to take part.

“This is about celebrating women in our community — who they are today,” said Kidd. “It’s about stepping outside your comfort zone, having fun, and being part of something meaningful.”

As Dunnville looks ahead to this milestone year, the return of Ms. Mudcat represents more than a revival — it’s a bridge between generations.

A reminder that while traditions may evolve, their spirit can endure.

And as more stories, names, and faces are uncovered, one thing is certain:

The legacy of Miss Mudcat and Miss Grand River is far from over.
